Women in Security: Empowering South Africa's Future

ATG Digital - Women in Security - Blonde Women in Tech

August is dedicated to Women and Women in Security as we celebrate Women's Day on 9 August.

It's time to shine a spotlight on women's vital role in South Africa's security industry. From physical security to access control, female professionals are making significant strides in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Did you know South Africa boasts one of the largest private security sectors globally? With four private security personnel for every police officer, the industry is rapidly expanding. However, women remain underrepresented, comprising only 10-11% of the security workforce (News24, 2021).

Breaking Barriers in Physical Security

Despite the challenges, women are proving their valour in various security roles. They excel as public safety officers, junior controllers, and, increasingly, in management positions. These women bring unique perspectives and skills, enhancing the industry's ability to address diverse security challenges.

The private security sector's growth creates numerous opportunities for women to advance. If you're considering a career in security, now is an excellent time to enter the field. With dedication and hard work, you can climb the ranks and contribute to shaping the future of security in South Africa.

Almost half of the Western Cape's new Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (Leap) officers are women (StatsSA).

Women in Security, Access Control and Beyond

Women are not just making waves in traditional security roles. They're also at the forefront of technological advancements in the industry. From designing sophisticated access control systems to developing innovative security solutions, female professionals are driving progress in the sector.

Compared to global trends, the representation of women in the South African security industry lags behind many other countries, where women make up a larger share of the workforce. In the United States, for example, women account for around 40% of security personnel, while the figure is around 35% in the United Kingdom (van Rensburg, Shandré K. Jansen. (2021)).

As a woman in security, you have the power to bring fresh ideas and approaches to critical issues like gender-based violence and personal safety. Your unique experiences and insights can lead to more comprehensive and effective security strategies.

Championing Gender Parity

We are making progress as a nation, but there's still work to do in achieving gender parity in the security industry. Organisations like ASIS International's South Africa Chapter are actively working to increase female membership and exposure in the sector.

You can contribute to this change as a security professional by:

  • mentoring other women,

  • advocating for equal opportunities, and

  • challenging outdated stereotypes.

Remember, your success paves the way for future generations of women in security.

The gender pay gap in South Africa is estimated to be between 23% and 35% (HSRC, 2023).

Job Security and Career Growth

The security industry offers excellent job security and diverse career paths, some of which include:

1. Cybersecurity

2. Risk management

4. Corporate security

5. Security consulting

Updating your skills and embracing new technologies will ensure long-term career growth and success in this dynamic industry.

Female Empowerment in Private Security

This change isn't just about gender parity; it's about enhancing the effectiveness of security measures across the board.

Private security companies are increasingly recognising the value of female employees. Women often excel in conflict resolution, attention to detail, and multitasking – all crucial skills in security roles.

By embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive environment, the security industry can tap into a broader talent pool and drive innovation.

Looking Ahead: The Future is Female

As we celebrate Women's Day, let's acknowledge the strides made by women in security while recognising the work that lies ahead. The security industry needs diverse perspectives to tackle complex challenges effectively. By encouraging more women to enter and thrive in this field, we're not just promoting gender equality – we're enhancing the safety and security of all South Africans.

The future of security in South Africa is brighter, with women like you at the forefront.
